What is 3 axis machining?

Three axis machining sounds complicated but involves a straightforward concept. The workpiece remains still while the cutting tool moves along the 3 separate axes (back to front, side to side, and up and down) in order to mill the part.  Cutting tools are held horizontally (horizontal machine centers), or vertically (vertical machine centers) and spin while the workpiece remains stationary in order to machine the part being held. 3-axis machining today is still one of the most used techniques to create parts of all sorts. 3 axis machining amongst other things can be used for milling slots, creating flat surfaces, drilling/tapping holes, and cutting sharp edges.

Benefits of 3-axis machining include:

• All 3 axes can move at the same time. This allows the machine to create more complex components more efficiently vs other generally non-cnc sub 3 axes methods.
• Most complete machining elements can be produced using 3 axis machines. These can include fixtures, clamps, stocks, chuck jaws and machine clamps.
• These machines can be equipped with an automatic tool changer. This allows the machine to complete multiple operations using just one machine.
• 3-axis CNC machines require the instructions (coding) for milling to inputted into the onboard computer. Once this has been done the machine completes the operation automatically, and this program can be run as many times as needed.
• Some three axis CNC machining centers can be upgraded to 4 or 5 axis machining centers. This allows a machine shop to upgrade their capabilities without spending capital on an entirely different machine.
